  • Cloud Peak Energy Buys Coal Mine Near Sheridan

    Cloud Peak Energy, the owners of the Spring Creek Coal Mine in Montana, has purchased an undeveloped coal mine near Sheridan, WY for $300 million from the Youngs Creek Mining Company.

    The new mine has already obtained its mining permits and once operational is estimated to employ about 200 people at the site. While Wyoming is one of the largest coal producing states most of its production is centered around Gillette. This mine is about 100 miles west of there, and is in a region that has not recently had significant coal mining.

    Rio Tinto sells entire stake in Cloud Peak Energy

    December 22, 2010

    Rio Tinto has sold all of its shares in Cloud Peak Energy, generating more than $570M in income. The sale was consistent with Rio Tinto’s policy to sell off non-core assets to pay for the acquisition of Canadian aluminium group Alcan.

    Cloud Peak owns and operates the Antelope, Cordero Rojo and Spring Creek coal mines in the Powder River Basin. They also have a 50% interest in the Decker Mine in the PRB.

    Rio Tinto announces sale price for Cloud Peak shares

    December 16, 2010

    Rio Tinto, which spun out Cloud Peak Energy in an IPO in 2009, has set the price to sell off its remaining shares in Cloud Peak. It hopes to raise almost $500M dollars from the sale.

    The RTZ-CRA group operates the Antelope Coal Mine, the ColoWyo Mine, the Cordero Mine and the Spring Creek Coal Company.

    Cloud Peak Energy officials optimistic about boosting coal exports to Asia

    November 28, 2010

    Officials from Cloud Peak Energy, the third largest coal producer in the country, say that their coal exports of 3M tons this year will be almost double those of last year, and that as terminals on the west coast are built, there is a huge potential for future growth in coal sales due to the huge industrial growth in Asia. Currently Cloud Peak exports through the Westshore facility near Vancouver, B.C.; however that port is already at capacity.

    Morgan Stanley Downgraded Cloud Peak Energy To Equal-Weight (CLD,MS)

    Morgan Stanley has reduced Cloud Peak rating from overweight to equal-weight, setting Cloud Peak’s at $19. Cloud Peak manages Cordero Rojo and the Antelope coal mine in Wyoming and Silver Creek mines in Montana.
