  • BLM denies Wyo. coal lease application

    June 10, 2011

The Bureau of Land Management has rejected the West Coal Creek Lease By Application because one of the landowners does not consent to have his land mined. This is possibly the first time that the BLM has ever denied a Lease By Application in the state of Wyoming. In its decision the BLM states that it acted because talks between Arch Coal (owner of the Coal Creek Mine) and Dennis Edwards (owner of a large piece of the proposed expansion), were unable to come to an agreement to allow mining on the land. Further information was not obtained because neither Mr. Edwards or Arch Coal would comment.

The West Coal Creek LBA was originally filed in February 2006.

Blocked by landowner, BLM nixes Powder River Basin coal lease

    June 10, 2011

In a decision believed to be the first of its kind in Wyoming, the Bureau of Land Management has denied a coal mine’s request to put a parcel of land up for coal mining. The owner of the surface rights for most of the 1151 acres in the lease proposal refused to consent to the lease of the mineral rights underneath his property. “The BLM has not received a consent document and does not offer for lease qualified surface owner lands at a competitive coal lease sale without such consent,” the agency said in its decision.

The lease was sought by the Coal Creek Mine south of Gillette, WY as a way to expand its coal reserves. However it’s not clear how much impact the decision will have on the mine’s operations; considering that the mine still has more than 600M tons of recoverable reserves, it has more than 50 years of coal mining left at 2010 production levels. The lease application was one of a dozen so called “maintenance leases” that totaled more than 35000 acres and almost 4.5M tons of coal.

Former Wyoming governor joins Arch Coal board

    February 23, 2011

Dave Freudenthal, former governor of Wyoming, has been named to the board of Arch Coal. Arch mined 160M tons of coal last year, much of it in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin and Green River regions. Freudenthal served two terms as governor and was very popular in the state, in spite being a Democrat in a strongly Republican state.

Eyeing Asian market, Arch Coal invests in western port

    January 13, 2011

Arch Coal has acquired a 38% interest in the west coast terminal that is going through the approval process to become the only west coast coal exporting facility in the continental United States. Arch paid $25M for its share of the terminal which could export up to 5 million tons of coal annually to China and other Asian countries starting in 2012. Arch coal plans to ship from its Coal Creek and Black Thunder mines in the Powder River Basin, and also hopes to eventually pull in coal mined in Montana. The facility’s permitting is being fought by several environmentalist organizations and the Washington State Department of Ecology.

At the same time rival company Peabody Coal is trying to develop its own west-coast coal export terminal, though it hasn’t publicly stated where it is concentrating its efforts.

Arch Coal stock drops on investment rating downgrade

    23 November, 2010

Arch Coal stock dropped nearly 5 percent on news that its investment rating had been downgraded to by BB&T Capital Markets from a “buy” to “hold” rating. Characterized as a “lack of regional production discipline” by Arch’s PRB holdings, increased production in the West has led to dropping prices.

2011 and 2012 earnings estimates were unaffected.

    Arch’s Profits Slip below Consensus

    November 1, 2010

Coal producer Arch Coal has missed the consensus net adjusted earnings rate for its latest quarter reporting a profit of 35 cents per share instead of the 37 cents per share predicted. This is in spite of Arch raising its production for Q3 2010 to 43.7 million tons of coal compared with Q3 2009 production of 29.1 million tons. Additionally Arch reduced its cost per ton produced from $13.70 from its cost of $15.75 Q3 last year, and raised its predicted production to a total of 155–158 million tons for 2010.
